Garbage Disposal Repair or Replacement? How to Decide

A garbage disposal acting up is usually one of two things: an easy fix, or a sign the unit has reached the end of its life. Here is how to tell which one you are dealing with before you call anyone out.

It Just Hums or Won't Turn On

A humming disposal that will not spin is almost always a jam, not a dead unit. Most disposals have a small hex-shaped hole on the bottom where you can insert an Allen wrench and manually turn the blades to free whatever is stuck. If that does not work, or the unit is completely silent with no hum at all, the motor itself may have failed.

It Trips the Breaker Repeatedly

A disposal that keeps tripping the circuit breaker is usually overheating from a jam or overworking itself grinding something it should not. This is often repairable by clearing the jam and resetting the built-in reset button on the bottom of the unit. If it keeps happening after a clear jam, the motor may be wearing out.

It's Leaking

Where the leak is coming from matters. Leaks from the top, around the sink flange, usually mean the seal needs replacing, an affordable fix. Leaks from the bottom of the unit, however, often mean the housing itself has cracked, and that typically means replacement rather than repair.

It Smells Bad No Matter What You Grind

A persistent smell that does not go away with cleaning can mean food debris trapped somewhere the water does not reach, or in an aging unit, a sign the components are simply worn and holding onto residue. This one is a judgment call and often comes down to the age of the unit.

How Old Is It?

Most garbage disposals last 8 to 12 years. If yours is within that range and having one specific, fixable problem, repair usually makes sense. If it is older than that and showing multiple issues at once, replacement is typically the better value, since a new unit also tends to run quieter and more efficiently.

When to Just Call Someone

If you have tried the wrench trick, checked the reset button, and it is still not working, or if you smell burning, stop trying to fix it yourself. A technician can tell you within minutes whether it is a simple part or time for a new unit.

Questions

Common Questions

Is it safe to reach into the disposal to clear a jam?

Never put your hand inside the disposal. Always turn off the power at the switch or breaker first, and use tongs or the Allen wrench method through the bottom hex hole.

How long does a garbage disposal replacement take?

Most replacements are done in under an hour once the technician is on site with the right unit.

Can any garbage disposal fit under my sink?

Most standard disposals fit standard sink setups, but mounting styles can differ between brands. A technician can confirm compatibility before the visit.

Why does my new disposal still smell?

New units can sometimes hold a manufacturing smell for the first few uses. If it persists past the first week, it is worth having it checked.
