Refrigerator Not Cooling? 5 Things to Check Before You Call for Repair

A warm refrigerator can feel like an emergency, but not every warm fridge needs a service call right away. Before you pick up the phone, a few quick checks can save you time and sometimes fix the problem yourself.

Check the Temperature Setting First

It sounds simple, but a bumped dial or a setting changed by a curious kid is more common than you think. Refrigerators should sit between 35 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit, and freezers should stay at 0 degrees. If the dial looks off, reset it and give the unit 24 hours to adjust before assuming something is broken.

Look at the Door Seal

Close the door on a piece of paper. If you can pull the paper out without any resistance, the door seal, also called a gasket, may be worn out. A bad seal lets warm air sneak in all day long, which forces the compressor to work overtime and can make the whole fridge feel warmer than it should.

Clear the Condenser Coils

Most refrigerators have coils either behind the unit or underneath, hidden by a bottom panel. Dust and pet hair build up on these coils over time and block the fridge from releasing heat properly. Unplug the unit, vacuum the coils gently, and plug it back in. This simple step fixes more warm-fridge complaints than people expect.

Give It Breathing Room

A refrigerator pushed tight against a wall or cabinet cannot release heat the way it needs to. Leave at least an inch or two of space behind and above the unit so air can move freely.

Listen for the Compressor

If you press your ear near the back of the fridge and hear nothing at all, the compressor may not be running. This is one of the few checks on this list that usually does point to a real repair, since a compressor that will not start is not something to fix with cleaning or spacing.

When It's Time to Call

If you have checked the setting, the seal, the coils, and the spacing, and the fridge is still warm, it is time to have a technician take a look. Chasing the problem further on your own risks turning a small part repair into a bigger one.
